Continuing the clean lines, constructed shapes, innovative use of color and thought-provoking juxtaposition of design elements in Volume I, JOICO® International Creative Directors Damien Carney and Sue Pemberton present the second volume of their Smoke and Mirrors trend collection for 2011. Smoke and Mirrors explores the possibilities of solid, grounded shapes and wearable color palettes enhanced by creative color placement and weight distribution.

The Techniques
Volume II features two models with complete cut and color how-tos.
#1: Alex/The Shape
Here, disconnection and undercutting create a multi-faceted, versatile short cut. Discreet areas can be exposed or concealed and the longer, disconnected areas can be texturized and styled in a variety of ways for maximum femininity.
“Consider these sections like a scarf,” Carney comments. “You can play around with them in a number of ways to ‘accessorize’ the cut. Use your hands to loosen or smooth the hair for the most natural-looking results.”
Healthy, shiny hair is at the foundation of the entire Smoke and Mirrors collection, so Carney preps each model with JOICO® K-Pak® Color Therapy Restorative Oil to produce maximum softness and brilliant shine.
Alex/The Color
Here, golden blonde, strawberry blonde and two cool reds (including 7XR from the recently launched JOICO® Vero K-Pak®Color XTra Reds collection) are placed in a neutral brunette base.
“I started with a zig-zag parting,” Pemberton explains, “and worked off the parting in vertical foils. I alternated the red and blonde shades all along one side of the zig-zag, then switched the order on the other side. So rather than seeing a linear, symmetric effect, you get an interesting, uneven design that takes on a new color pattern each time you comb the hair.”
#2: Rachel/The Shape
In this versatile midlength cut, longer lengths are combined with shorter sections to produce maximum movement. A shorter, head-hugging asymmetric shape in back is complemented by longer, face-framing lengths and a modern, squared-off fringe.
Rachel/The Color
Juxtaposed placement of light and dark shades enhances the movement in this cut. Pemberton places soft tones of caramel and toffee in a medium brown base. Then, foils are placed toward the hairline on one side and away from the hairline on the other side. Additionally, the lightest shades are placed at the hairline on one side of the head and the darker shades on the other for maximum contrast and energy.
